“Sage? Are you alright? Wake up.”

Hunter’s voice stirred in the darkness, and as my eyes fluttered open I found I was still on the Plant Superstore rooftop. It was still bright out and I was lying in the puddle of adhesive ooze. “Did we get him?”

“No, he got away. For a straight-laced businessman, he sure had a lot of gadgets up his sleeve.”

“What were those things? Those little orbs?” A flashbang, some adhesive ooze, sleeping gas. Lewis’s gadgetry put some superheroes to shame.

“They’re tactical magical orbs. Not illegal, but most normal people don’t carry them around.”

“Thelma said he’s a Dullspark. Looks like he took precautions.”

Hunter nodded as though that made sense, though he winced at the term. “Just a heads up, that term is considered a little offensive these days. People of that nature prefer the term, ‘LMA—Lesser Magically Abled.’ That goes some way to explaining why he would have tactical magical orbs.”

Hunter helped me up to my feet and I tried to scrape some of the goop out of my hair. “We’re sure he got away?”

“Yeah. A witness reported him running into the woods at the back of the store. Guardian backup has already arrived and scanned the perimeter, but there’s no sign of him. He must have had a broom stored there. I’m sorry it took me so long to catch up, that flashbang really did a number on my eyes.”

“How long was I out?”

“About twenty minutes. Are you sure you’re alright?”

“I’m fine. I’m annoyed that Captain Business got away though. What do we do now? We can’t stand here while a murder suspect runs around town.”

“I’ve already put a state-wide alert out with his name and face attached. He won’t be running for long. We’ll catch him, even with all his little gadgets.”

I let out a flustered breath. After running, Lewis had now jumped to our most-wanted man and the fact that he had got away annoyed me significantly. “I don’t suppose there’s any sign of Erik yet?” I asked.

“No. I’ll have some guys swing by the hardware store and see if they can track him down.” Hunter put a hand on my shoulder and then stared disapprovingly at the adhesive goop. “Uh… why don’t you go home and shower? You’ve been on your feet since this morning. It’ll be good to have a bit of downtime.”

“I think I agree with you there. Let me know if there are any developments with Lewis or Erik?”

Hunter nodded. “Of course. I’d kiss you goodbye, but you’re kind of covered in that glue goop.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m gross. I get it!”
